skills they need to recognize, avoid, escape or cope with the potential violence in their lives. The basic knowledge and understanding that no has the right to hurt them. We teach them the basics of calling 911 for emergencies, what those emergencies are and also how to refuse drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. We also teach them about school safety, home safety, vehicle safety and how to be safe when they are out and about. They are also taught the responses they should have to tricks that strangers would use to try and lure them into vulnerable/potential dangerous situations. With the knowledge they receive to keep their minds and emotions safe, we also teach them practical exercises to keep them physically safe and alive. We teach them resistance strategies and that we want them to cause enough resistance to provide a distraction for them to get away. We do not teach them to stick around and fight, but to resist enough to be able to get away and be safe. During the course of the three days, we teach the course in three hour blocks. For the first hour each day we go over safety tips to help protect their mind and do exercises to demonstrate that they have learned to keep their minds safe. The second block of time is to demonstrate and perform the practical exercises by putting them through rigorous self defense training. The end of the third day is dedicated to practicing what was learned during the week and then demonstrating those techniques for parents/family on an instructor, in a Red Man Suit. We then have a short graduation ceremony and certificates are awarded, with their photo and fingerprint. We encourage parents to observe the training. At least two instructors are present during the training sessions. |
